It’s hard to believe something this chocolatey and fudgy could actually be pretty healthy but these Fudgy Avocado Brownies are just that! Grain-free, dairy-free, nut-free and low carb too!

Fudgy delicious brownies made without any flour. Not only that, but without any flour substitutes. That is what I am sharing with you all today!

I know what you’re thinking- there’s no way this recipe can work. No flour? No oats? Not even almond flour? How can it come together? Oh it does! Like magic, these chocolatey brownies work remarkably well and if you serve them up to your family, they probably won’t even realize that they are grain-free!

And if I haven’t sold you on the idea of these avocado brownies yet, let me tell you how there is no butter or oil in these brownies either.

So how did I make brownies without flour, butter or oil? The secret ingredient is avocados! I don’t know the science of how they do their magic, but can I tell you that they produce fudgy brownies that are ultra moist and crumbly and taste just like regular brownies.

They’re also super easy to make, nutritious (avocado for the win!), and so delicious!

If all this wasn’t good enough, the best part is that these healthy brownies whip up in one bowl too (or a food processor)! This means an easier clean up and makes this recipe an absolute favourite in our house! Super easy, full of health benefits, and sure to satisfy that chocolate craving!

Does this Avocado Brownies Recipe Taste like Avocado?

If you are worries about these decadent brownies leaving you with the strong taste of avocado in your mouth, fret not. You can’t even taste the avocado in the brownie.

My hubby is not a big fan of avocados and the first time I made them for him, I didn’t even tell him they had avocado to see if he would notice. He didn’t detect it at all! Imagine the pleasant surprise when I told him about my healthy brownies.

If my avocado-averse hubby requests these, then you know the recipe is a hit!

Ingredients in this Fudgy Avocado Brownies Recipe

In addition to avocados, you only need a handful of basic ingredients for this recipe. These simple ingredients include:

  • Avocado: 1/2 a cup mashed avocado (about 2 small ripe avocado). Fresh avocado is the main source of fat for these brownies (and healthy fats too)! While avocados are used in the recipe, there is no avocado taste in the final result.
  • Sugar: You can use regular granulated sugar, coconut sugar, or a keto-sweetener such as erythritol. I do not recommend replacing the sugar with a liquid sweetener like maple syrup or honey as this will add more moisture to the recipe and affect the outcome.
  • Cocoa powder: I mean, we are making brownies! The unsweetened cocoa powder gives them the rich, chocolate flavor.
  • Large eggs, pure vanilla extract, salt: standard brownies ingredients.
  • Baking powder: used as a leavener.
  • Chocolate chips: You can use regular, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dairy-free chocolate chips (to keep this a dairy-free recipe) or even keto chocolate chips if you are on a keto diet.

Note: Ingredient quantities and full instructions are in the recipe card at the end of this post.

How to make this Healthy Avocado Brownie Recipe

  1. Prepare the baking dish: Preheat oven to 325F and line a 9×9 baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Mash the avocado: In a large bowl mash the avocados well so that there are no chunks left (alternatively, you can run it through a food processor).
  3. Add the wet ingredients and dry ingredients: Add the sugar, cocoa powder, eggs, vanilla extract, baking powder and salt to the large mixing bowl. Mix until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Bake: Transfer the chocolate avocado mixture to the prepared baking pan and smooth out. Bake for 35 minutes or until the brownies have set in the center. Let them cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, slice into squares.

Optional Topping Ideas

I love this recipe as it is written but you can definitely elevate these brownies to suit your own tastes! Some options include adding a Chocolate Avocado Frosting on top or drizzling on some melted chocolate or even melted peanut butter or almond butter (if you aren’t worried about keeping this recipe nut-free).

How to Store Leftover Brownies

These healthy avocado brownies are good to sit out at room temperature in an airtight container for a day or two but will last longer in the fridge.

Can you Freeze this Avocado Brownies Recipe?

Yes, you can also freeze this healthy brownie recipe. Be sure to separate layers with parchment to prevent them from sticking. Alternatively, you can wrap each portion in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer safe bag. This makes it easy to grab and defrost a single slice for a quick snack.

Are these avocado brownies keto-friendly?

While these brownies are considerably lower in carbs then traditional brownies, they do still contain sugar which means they are not keto-compliant unless you replace the sugar with a keto sweetener like erythritol. Be sure to use keto chocolate chips as well to make these keto-friendly or omit the chocolate chips altogether.

With these simple swaps, you can have fudgy keto avocado brownies!

Can you make these vegan avocado brownies?

This recipe can be made dairy-free but it does contain eggs, meaning they are not vegan. I personally have not tried these with a vegan egg replacement (like flax eggs). I can’t say for certain that it will work out this way but I imagine it could work. If anyone tries it, I would love to know!

This healthy brownies recipe produces a delicious treat with the perfect fudgy texture you love in traditional brownies. We love these low carb brownies and hope you do too!

I just made these & they taste amazing!!! They melt in the mouth like a fudge or mousse. I’m kind of confused by them because they almost feel underbaked when I eat them. But they are fully cooked, a knife inserted in the center came out clean… Does this sound mousse like texture sound like your final product? Thanks!!

This is the best brownie recipe I’ve had, hands down! They stay fudgey and moist for days, and have a rich flavor. I took these to work and they were GONE in just 2 hours! You don’t taste the avocado at all, and is a bonus gluten free dairy free dish for dietary needs. 6/5 stars

Hi Mandi, I have a section on how I store leftover brownies in my post. I often leave them out for a day or so but for longer storage, they need to be refrigerated.

Amazing! I made with one avocado and used “fake sugar”! Although thin, I can’t believe how good they are! My super picky husband even liked them and couldn’t believe what they were made of!!😂 I’ve recently started dieting and exercising (again) and these are going to solve my sweet craving significantly!!!
    Thank you!!!!❤️❤️❤️

I used maple syrup and chia eggs as substitutes. I did a double batch so I used 4 chia eggs and 3/4c of maple syrup. I also added about 1/4 cup of silk milk as I found it was too thick. I also added dairy free vegan chocolate chips.
Cooked for approx 40minutes and took out and let set and then put in the fridge and omg the next day they were amazing.
I’m making them again as I type this. My husband loves them.
